much ado about nothing

One step forward, two steps back. Three steps forward, one step back. Two steps forward, seven steps back. Five steps forward, three steps back. So goes Camille’s bedtime/naptime-without-a-paci saga. We haven’t given it back to her and likely won’t. It’s going on two weeks now, and while I’m tired of all this sleeptime drama I think we might be headed in the right direction. I do know that once she’s asleep she sleeps much better than she did when she had her paci.

I’ve been seriously considering homeschooling Camille next year for preschool, and potentially beyond. Aaron and I have been talking about it and weighing the pros and cons. It’s not something that had ever crossed my mind until recently and, to be honest, the idea of it sort of freaks me out. But when God starts tugging your heart in an unexpected direction there’s not much to do about it except follow along in faith.

There’s a mosquito bite on the bottom of my foot.

We’ve finally found a renter for our townhouse. Aaron is glad to not have to meet with prospective renters each evening anymore. Now we’re just praying that our renter is as low-maintenance as our last renters.

Levi continues to go to bed ridiculously early. He also has been taking mini naps all day. 45 minutes has pretty much been his max, though occasionally he’ll nap a marathon and stay down for a couple hours. I remember Camille did this when she was a baby. I’m hoping it’s just a phase that I have to wait out. It must be, because he certainly can’t take four or five mini naps every day for his entire life. But gosh, now that I think about it four naps a day would feel delightful!

The diapers are done in the washer so I’d best get them into the dryer so I can hit the sack. I’ve got to catch zzzz’s any chance I can find these days. Though I will admit that Levi is a great sleeper and I only have to feed him once in the wee hours of the mornings. But still, I’ve always been a girl who likes sleep.

these days

These days...

...have seen some pretty stressful falling asleep times for Camille. The Paci Fairy (actually known in our house as the Nukker Fairy) came on Sunday and Camille has (expectedly) been having a hard time settling herself down to go to sleep. We are seeing improvements though and I'm hopeful things will be back to normal soon.

...our little Levi sucks on his hands as if he was enjoying a refreshing ice cream cone.

...Aaron spends most evenings at our townhouse meeting with prospective renters.

...it seems as if my parents are going off on road trips every three days. Not only did they go to St. Louis two weekends ago, they also had a one-day trip to North Dakota for a family gathering. I'm pretty sure they're getting sick of us and just looking for excuses to get out of here!

...Camille has been busy spending as much time outside as she possibly can. We returned to our favorite park tonight for a Chinese food picnic and some water fun.

...I spend the weekdays busy with two babies and a two-year old doing lots of cuddling, feeding, diaper-changing, and reading to. I'm back to work full time now and am still adjusting to the exhausting nature of my job. But exhausting though it may be, we also have a lot of fun and are enjoying the summer. I feel so blessed to be able to bring in an income while still keeping my kids with me.

...bedtime for Levi has been around 6 pm. This usually means that if we're not home when he gets sleepy I pop him in our wrap and he drifts off to sleep wherever we are. This has really been an invaluable investment and I am so glad I discovered it before he was born. Rarely does a day go by that it doesn't get used.

...we've been going to church in the evenings so Camille can enjoy the opening music for the VBS program. She's too young still this year to stay the whole night, but next year she'll be able to join the preschool group. I'm so excited for her because I know she is just going to love it!

As you can see we're keeping busy. There aren't enough hours in the day for me to get done all that needs to be done. But I'm trying to slow down and enjoy my family. My mom will laugh when she sees that I'm posting this poem but I'm using it as my excuse...

Mother, oh Mother, come shake out your cloth,
Empty the dustpan, poison the moth,
Hang out the washing and butter the bread,
Sew on a button and make up a bed.
Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She's up in the nursery, blissfully rocking!

Oh, I've grown shiftless as Little Boy Blue
(Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo).
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due
(Pat-a-cake, darling, and peek, peekaboo).
The shopping's not done and there's nothing for stew
And out in the yard there's hullabaloo
But I'm playing Kanga and this is my Roo.
Look! Aren't her eyes the most wonderful hue?
(Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo).

The cleaning and scrubbing will wait till tomorrow,
But children grow up, as I've learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down, cobwebs. Dust go to sleep.
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep...

by Ruth Hulbert Hamilton, in Lady's Home Journal. 1958

So quiet down, cell phone. iPod go to sleep.
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep.

37

Well, it's official. I am considered full term now that I've reached the 37 week mark!

And now we play the waiting game.

It's a funny thing, when you think about it. To be waiting, but not know specifically what I am waiting for. With Camille the waiting game ended when my water broke. But that only happens in about 1 out of 10 pregnancies. This time I don't know if I'm waiting for my water to break or if I'm waiting for real* contractions to begin.

*I say "real" contractions because I have been feeling many contractions for several months. I will admit, though, that in the past week or so they have become much more frequent and uncomfortable.

So while we wait we finish preparing for this new little one. Are the cloth diapers ready? Is the pack n' play set up? Are the baby clothes washed?

And then I got to thinking...This is how we are supposed to be waiting for Christ's return! No, not with clean baby clothes. It makes my heart sad to think that I have been waiting more expectantly for this baby to arrive than I have for Jesus' return. But at least for the first time in my life (for some reason I didn't think about this with Camille) I am really understanding Matthew 24:36 - We don't know the day or hour Jesus will return! And similarly, I don't know the day or the hour this baby will come.

I pray that, even after our babe is born, I will remember this urgency to be prepared for Jesus to return. And, more importantly, to make sure others are ready for His return as well!

***

On a related (and yet completely unrelated) note, I have a funny story to share with you about Camille:

We were listening to KTIS (the local Christian radio station) on the radio in the car yesterday and there was a song about the Messiah. I was trying to explain to C that the Messiah is Jesus. Or, rather, Jesus is the Messiah. Really, knowing full well (well, almost full well) that I was only confusing her. But instead of hearing me say "Messiah," Camille was hearing the name "Josiah." (As many of you know, friends of ours have a new son named Josiah, who Camille has met and talks about often.) Well, now she thinks that Josiah is Jesus. Oh dear, how am I going to straighten this one out?!

let it snow

Word on the street is that we're getting at least a foot of snow over the next 48 hours. Hmmm, we'll just have to see how this plays out.

As for me, I'm glad we have no major traveling planned for Christmas. I'm looking forward to snuggling on the couch with my family, watching Camille play with the baby Jesus from our nativity set, and watching the snow fall outside.

Sounds like a nice Christmas to me!

my Christmas miracle

As some of you know, my cell phone went mysteriously missing yesterday. I had just dropped the girls off at school and was on my way to my 20 week OB appointment. I used my phone to call Aaron while I was in the car and pulled into the clinic's parking lot with barely enough time to run in and get to my appointment at 9:50. I was hurrying so I wouldn't be late, but when after I checked in and sat down to wait to be called back I realized I didn't have my phone with me.

I went about my appointment (met with a new doctor, who I actually really liked and will stick with for the duration of this pregnancy). After scheduling my 24 week appointment I headed back to the car to check for my phone. No phone. I looked on the ground as I made my way back into the clinic to ask security of they had seen a lost phone. They hadn't. Back to the car I went, where I checked extra good under my car and on the ground around my car. No phone.

Now, it's pretty common (maye once or twice a week) for me to forget my phone is in my lap while I'm driving, then to get out of the car and have it fall on the ground. But I always hear it fall. And I hadn't heard it fall.

So I went home and called Aaron and told him my sad story of the missing cell phone. Then I went out to lunch with a friend.

Later in the evening...Wait, actually late in the evning (we had already been in bed and I was whining that I was misssing my phone) Aaron decided he was going to go to the clinic to look in the parking lot for my phone. (What a husband!) I said I'd go with him and we headed out to the garage to get in the car.

Then the miracle happened! My friend happened to be stopping by (at after 10 at night!) to pick something up from us before we leave on vacation. She pulled into the driveway just as Aaron was getting ready to back out of the garage. I made my way to the driveway to meet my friend and noticed something reflecting off the ground from her headlights. Shiny? In the driveway?

My phone!!!!!

How could this be possible???

I still have no idea. At no point during the day did I even stop in the driveway (I park in the garage), let alone open the door (thus offering a chance for my phone to fall out). Which means my phone must have been somewhere on the exterior of the car hiding from me, but it hung on all the way from the clinic to our house and finally let go once we were in the driveway heading into the garage.

Amazing!

And this, dear friends, is my Christmas miracle!

seasons

A Season of Change

Camille is changing on a daily (and even hourly) basis! Her vocabulary is growing exponentially, and it seems as if she retains nearly 100% of everything she hears! It’s been so amazing watching her grow from a baby into a little girl, to see the wonder in her face when she learns something new. She loves having stories read to her, and just the other day went up to my Mom and said, “Baby bear!” when she wanted to hear the story of the three bears. When she was a newborn I couldn’t even imagine her growing up. I wanted her to stay tiny forever. And now I am finally seeing that as she grows I am loving each new stage more and more!

The seasons outside are also changing! Since we had such lovely weather over the weekend, Aaron and my Dad spent many many hours outside raking and bagging leaves. They had a very helpful assistant with them for much of the time, and it is clear that a fun (and tiring) time was had by all! We now have 54 giant paper lawn bags in our front yard waiting to be hauled off by the yard waste company.

Camille is definitely loving this warm fall weather we’ve had recently. I must admit that I’m not looking forward to the next change of seasons. I have a feeling I’m going to be spending much more time outside in the snow this winter than I ever have in my life!

As you can see, my blog has undergone some changes as well. It’s not the full blog makeover we were planning on, but due to financial set-backs we scaled back a bit for the time being. So for now you can enjoy my new header, background and signature. I am definitely loving the new look, and hope you enjoy it as well! Thank you so much to Jennisa at Once Upon A Blog Design Shoppe for your amazing work!

A Season of Uncertainty

Where, oh where to begin? I recently (and very unexpectedly) was informed that I will soon no longer have a job. This brings us so much more uncertainty than we were already experiencing. You see, we have already been quite uncertain about what the future holds for Aaron’s employment. Where is he best suited to use his gifts? What company can offer him the income and health benefits our family needs at this time? We are also considering the possibility of Aaron returning to school to finish the degree he started several years ago.

Along with this is the uncertainty of our housing situation. We have met with the family renting our townhouse and are now trying to determine if/when we will be able to move back into our own place. So much of this is dependent on our financial status come next summer, which, now even more so, is very up in the air. While we are very appreciative of my parents for giving us a semi-temporary place to live, and while we are truly enjoying spending time with them and giving Camille extra time with them, we all know that this must end eventually. During this time away from our townhouse we have also been blessed with wonderful renters who have taken great care of our home while we’ve been away from it. It may be sad that we cannot live there right now, but it’s a huge relief to not be uncertain that our home is being loved by another family who loves the Lord!

A Season of Growth and Blessing

So many new seasons in such a short time! Life will always have uncertainties and hardships, but life will always be filled with blessings as well. And boy do we have a big one to share with you all. Aaron, Camille and I are very excited to announce that our family will soon be growing!

Camille has been sporting her “BIG SIS” shirt around the house these past couple of months and I knew it was finally time to share our news with the world. I’ll be sure to keep you updated with how I’m doing, and of course will post ultrasound photos next month. As with Camille, we will not be finding out the gender of this baby at the ultrasound. It was such a wonderful experience leaving it as a surprise when she was born that I can’t imagine doing it any other way!

A Season of Promise

Last Friday at the mom’s group I attend in Eagan the lesson of the day was on faithfulness. Not just our faithfulness to God but, more importantly, the faithfulness He has shown to His people from the creation of the earth. God’s faithfulness doesn’t go through seasons. It is constant. This weekend as I cried over the loss of my job and all the uncertainties that go along with that I was also reminded of the faithfulness the Lord has showed our family for years and years. To be able to look back and know truly in my heart that He has never let us down brings me such a peace that even words cannot describe. God has a plan, and while it is surely not our plan, it is the best plan. He will see that we make it through financially. He already knows the name and future of our unborn babe. He holds us in His hand and promises that He will never leave us.

***

And so, as we go through each season in our lives, we can be confident of this: Seasons come and go. There will be seasons of uncertainty and seasons of blessing. But the Lord knows what’s going on. We can rest in the assurance that He’s got things under control!

We enjoyed a wonderfully cool weekend, with highs in the 60s. Perfect weather, in my opinion. We don't have much planned for the week ahead, but I'm sure I'll come up with some fun things to do with Camille and Isabel.

Right now I'm looking forward to curling up under the covers with a book until I drift off to sleep. 'Night!

confession

I just sat down to get my Haiku Tuesday post ready when I realized that I haven't posted since last Tuesday (OK, Wednesday). How embarrassing. Then I got to thinking, I didn't even take any pictures over the past week. Also inexcusable. But, in all honesty, I've just been busy enjoying life. I'm sad to realize that August is quickly coming to a close and before we know it the long winter will be upon us. What am I going to do when we can't enjoy time outside every day?

So alas, I've decided to skip tomorrow's Haiku Tuesday and instead go to bed early and wake up focusing on how to enjoy the little bit of summer we have left.

Oh, and maybe, just maybe, I'll take some photos too!

PS. Feel free to leave me a cheerful summertime haiku in the comments section. Or maybe a depressing wintery haiku. Or any ol' haiku that you think I simply might enjoy.

PPS. My dear friend Megan told me I should inform all of you of the interesting words Camille has been saying lately. Here are a few: chocolate, backpack, bubble, fly (as in butterfly), bonk, duck, and oh ho (as in uh oh, as in oops).

blessings

I had a difficult time titling this post. Although I intended to only post a photo, when I decided that "blessings" was appropriate, I thought it would be nice to explain why I chose it.

You see...hmmmm.

I don't quite know what to say.

It's just that, well, I suppose it's really self-explanitory.

I love this kid so very much. And I feel so blessed to be Camille's mother.

Even when it looks like she is trying to put the bubble wand up her nose.

Yep. That about sums it up.

simply satisfying

I find that there's just something so innately satisfying about washing diapers. Perhaps this indicates that I have some sort of underlying mental illness, but I prefer to call it a sense of responsibility. Responsibility? you ask. Yes. Responsibility. You see, for every diaper that goes through our washing machine and dryer, that's one less diaper that I'll have to buy next week, one less diaper that sits in the landfill for hundreds of years, and one less chemical-filled disposable diaper strapped onto Camille.

Sure, she wears disposable diapers every once in a while. Some days more than others. But I would much rather drop a diaper into the washing machine than toss one into the garbage.

So tonight, as I do some other cleaning, read my book, watch some tv, and check email, I will listen for the washing machine to finish. When it's done I'll put the diapers in the dryer, continue with what I've been doing, and by the time I go to bed I'll have a laundry basket full of clean, warm, fluffy cloth diapers. How simply satisfying!

PS - I'm thinking of doing a post one day soon on the types of diapers we use (and have used in the past). Anyone interested in hearing about that?

my summertime favorite

This summer I've been a big fan of s'mores. We've had them several times when we've had bonfires out on the beach in the backyard. Unfortunatly, it was much too windy on Thursday to have a bonfire. So Megan and I decided to take matters into our own hands and toast some marshmallows on the stove.

But to enjoy the outdoors s'mores experience we went outside to eat our ooey gooey toasty treats. And enjoy them we did...

I think we just may need to make some more tonight!

Good Search

Aaron's mom recently introduced me to a search engine they have been using for their online searches. It's called Good Search, and for every search you enter, one penny is donated to the charity of your choice. A small drop in the bucket, I know, but it can add up over time. So I just wanted to encourage you to give it a try. Find a non-profit company you'd like to support, and click away!

a funeral

Today we attended the funeral of Lutheran High School (most recently known as Concordial Academy - Bloomington), the school Aaron and I met at, attended together, and graduated from. What a bittersweet time it was, being reunited with old friends, only to be saying goodbye to our alma mater.

I really enjoyed my high school days and met people there that have impacted my entire life. And while I don't think I've ever felt particularly attached to the school itself, I realize that some of the most important relationships in my life were born, grew, or strengthened during my time at LHS. How could I not be a bit sad saying farewell to the school that introducted me to Aaron. How could I walk by the classrooms and not remember the hours of classes I spent with Megan and others? How could I glance into the chapel and not be reminded of the countless times Christ spoke to my heart through songs, His Word, and the testimonies of my classmates and teachers?

And while it is sad to know that the school is closing, I am still encouraged that the life of the school is not in the building itself, but in the people who have filled the building over the past four decades. Christian education will continue, and children will continue to be taught the gospel of Jesus Christ. And these children will continue to be sent out into the world to proclaim this Good News.

busy as a bee

I haven't blogged in several days because I've been busy, busy, busy! When I'm not tending to a mischievous toddler, I can be found cleaning, cutting, sewing, Twins game attending, clothes and diaper laundering, and whatever else needs to get done. Kristy and I have decided to start a business (more on that another day) and have been busy researching and sewing and trying to get our ducks in a row. Those would be proverbial ducks, not the real kind that like to quack in our back yard.

One thing that has been hampering my sewing, cutting, and even blogging, is that the tendonitis in my right wrist has decided to rear its (proverbial) ugly head once again. I can't do anything with it for long before it's too painful to move at all. Please pray that it will heal so that I can once again continue on with all of my many hobbies!

Camille has been an absolute angel (that is, if you consider a toddler who is throwing a tantrum nearly half of her waking ours an angel). She was an absolte terror the entire hour before nap time this morning. Of course, poor Isabel was the one who took the brunt of it. But Isabel hung in there and stood up for herself, and got right back on the horse when she was pushed off (not a proverbial horse, but rather a rocking horse).

The Twins game yesterday was much fun. We went with Auntie Megan, and my Dad also happened to be at the game with some coworkers. He took Camille for several innings, giving Megan and I a chance to actually watch some of the game. Not to mention it gave us a nice opportunity to eat our lunch in peace! I'll post more on the game another day, complete with a couple of photos. You can read Megan's post about our outing here.

For now, I'm going to take this quiet opportunity to close my eyes, rest my wrist, and re-energize myself for the rest of the day.

blessings,

and the winner is...

Kristy!!!
(For some reason, Kristy, your comments don't show up as a comment, but rather as an email. But nevertheless, you had a correct guess!!)

Kristy guessed that there was a ducky and a spoon in the red pail...

Camille spent a good 15 minutes toting around that red pail with the yellow rubber ducky and her sippy cup. In the first picture of the previous post, you'll notice her trying to fit her head into the pail. I do believe she was trying to drink from her cup.

On an unrelated note, we all enjoyed this beauiful long weekend. My parents were out of town with friends so we had the house to ourselves. We spent Saturday running errands and doing things we've been meaning to do for ages. Today I spent much of the day sewing diapers with Jeannie and visiting the home of my new (professional diaper-sewing) friend.

Aaron is currently fostering his new addiction by watching the movie Barbershop (which, I have to agree, is actually a pretty good movie).

Well, off to more sewing...

a mini update

Since my Mom has been unable to post since they've been in Fargo (not internet at Great-Grandma and -Grandpa's), I thought I'd just let everyone know that they are doing well and Camille seems (according to my Dad) to be having a good time. Although she does, of course, miss her mommy and daddy a bit I'm sure.

There is also rumor that a second tooth has popped through her gums right next to her first tooth (which, you'll remember, appeared nearly six weeks ago).

I've also heard that photos have been taken, and possibly even a few video clips. So if you'll all wait patiently, I'm sure they'll be posted by this time tomorrow. Their ETA is around dinnertime tomorrow, and let me tell you...it can't come soon enough!

On a separate note, Kristy and I attended the Living Green Expo today and had a marvelous time! We learned about lots of great stuff, were inspired by some new ideas, and have many "green" plans swimming around in our heads. As we were walking out Kristy turned to me and asked, "Am I looking greener?" Yes, Kristy, you are definitely looking greener! So, dear friends, you can look forward to more green posts in the near future.

As for me, I am going to get ready for bed, read a chapter of A Wrinkle in Time, and fall asleep dreaming of tesseracts. I plan on sleeping in tomorrow even later than I did today (which won't be hard to beat, since I got up before 8) and attending the late service at church with Aaron. I'd also like to add that I'm looking forward to not dealing with a squirmy toddler in church. And who knows, maybe we'll even make it to Bible study...finally!

Well, off to bed. My homemade (not by me) face soap is calling me...

HE IS RISEN!

He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

Today we celebrate the most important holiday of the Church (no, not Christmas). I wish all you, our friends and family, a very blessed and joyful Easter! I pray that you all remember the magnificence of the empty tomb.

~
He lives, all glory to His Name!
He lives, my Jesus, still the same.
Oh, the sweet joy this sentence gives,
I know that my Redeemer lives!
~

As I dress Camille in her special Easter dress I am reminded of her very first Easter last year. I remember buying her Easter outfit even before she was born, even before we knew if we would have a baby girl or a baby boy for Easter (we also bought a boy outfit). I rememebr moments after she was born, when Aaron whispered into my ear, "She gets to wear her Easter dress in a couple weeks!" You can click here to see my post from last Easter. What a year it has been!

I will post pictures later tonight if I have time. But for the most part I plan on spending the day with the ones I love, experiencing the blessings given me by the One who gave His life for me.

Christ is risen!
He is risen indeed!
Alleluia!

Easter Vigil

Rejoice now, all you heavenly choirs of angels; rejoice now all creation; send forth, trumpet of salvation, and proclaim the triumph of our King.

Rejoice too, all earth, in the radiance of the light now poured upon you and made brilliant by the brightness of the everlasting King; know that the ancient darkness has been forever banished.

Rejoice, O church of Christ, clothed in the brightness of the light; let all the house of God ring out with rejoicing, with the praises of all God's faithful people.

"(Do you not know) that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may have a new life." Romans 6:3-4

As we hold this Easter vigil tonight, be reminded of the life you are given through your holy baptism. For through Jesus' own death and resurrection, we ourselves are considered dead to sin and alive in Christ!

One Year Later

Camille had a really great first birthday! We spent the day with Isabel, of course, but were able to go have lunch with Aaron at Noodles. She enjoyed her most favorite meal there, Wisconsin Mac n' Cheese! We had Bible study at church at 6, and before that we went to the soup supper. After eating dinner, Camille dug into the mini chocolate cake my Mom had made for her. She LOVED it! She made a nice little mess of it, right there at church. Everyone had such a great time watching her eat it. Unfortunately, I seem to have misplaced my camera somewhere between Isabel's house and church yesterday, so we weren't able to take any cake pictures! Aaron did get a couple on his phone, so we'll see if we can upload some later.

Before we went to bed last night we were looking at pictures of Camille when she was born (I was putting together a slideshow for her party). It was amazing to see how little she was, and to be able to look at those pictures at exactly the same time she was born (9:32 pm) but one year later. How blessed we are to have such a wonderful daughter!

Thank you for all the birthday wishes! We'll try to get some pictures posted soon!

For our Sweet Camille!

We dreamed of having children for what seems like so long. For years, even before we were married, we would talk about how many children we wanted and what we would name them, never fully believing that the day would ever come. When we found out we were expecting our first baby we were overjoyed. Many questions ran through our heads. Was God really going to entrust us with His very precious child? Would we be good parents? Is it a boy or a girl? What will we name him or her?

When Camille finally arrived on March 4, 2008 at 9:32 PM, our lives were flipped upside down. Things that had mattered before seemed instantly less important. Here was this tiny little girl who completely depended on us and already loved us unconditionally. Over the months that followed we got to know each other more and more. We learned her likes and dislikes. She learned we would be there whenever she needed us.

It's been a year now that her presence has blessed our lives. Sure, we've made some mistakes, and we know we will make more. But we can't help but be thrilled and excited in anticipation of the many more years we will have with her and memories we will make with her. We look forward to watching her grow up into the person God has created her to be.

Our dear, sweet Camille, we want you know just how very much your we love you. What a beautiful blessing you are to us and to everyone who knows you! You have brought us more joy than we ever could have imagined. We pray that you will always know and feel the love that Jesus has for you and the peace that only He can offer! May you grow in His grace and love each and every day of your life!

Love,
Daddy & Mommy
